Why Do We Volunteer?

Why We Volunteer

Every season, I hear a question in one form or another:

"Why do people volunteer so much for AYSO?"

Sometimes it's asked with genuine curiosity. Other times it's asked with a bit of skepticism, as though there must be some hidden reward.

The truth is much simpler.

There isn't.

No one becomes a volunteer because it's easy.

No one signs up because they want more meetings, more emails, more scheduling conflicts, more weekends spent lining fields before sunrise or cleaning them after everyone has gone home.

No one volunteers because they enjoy difficult conversations with parents, finding coaches at the last minute, solving registration problems, replacing broken goals, ordering uniforms, or answering text messages late into the evening.

They volunteer because they care.

They care about kids who deserve a safe place to play.

They care about families who want to spend time together.

They care about building something that will still be here long after their own children have grown up.

Every season, our volunteers quietly donate thousands of hours to this community.

They coach after working full-time jobs.

They referee games because every child deserves someone willing to blow the whistle fairly.

They prepare fields before the first players arrive.

They paint lines, repair equipment, organize teams, manage finances, answer questions, plan schedules, coordinate pictures, order trophies, arrange tournaments, and solve countless problems that most families never even realize exist.

And that's exactly how it should be.

If we've done our jobs well, all you notice is children laughing, learning, competing, and making memories.

The work behind those moments is intentionally invisible.

We don't volunteer because we expect recognition.

We volunteer because someone once did it for us.

Every adult who remembers a favorite coach, a patient referee, or a mentor who believed in them has benefited from someone else's willingness to give their time.

Now it's our turn.

One day, today's players will become tomorrow's coaches.

Today's parents will become tomorrow's mentors.

The community we're building isn't measured in championships.

It's measured in confidence.

In friendships.

In resilience.

In the shy child who finally smiles after scoring their first goal.

In the player who learns that mistakes aren't failures—they're opportunities to grow.

In the teenager who returns years later to referee because they remember what AYSO meant to them.

That is the return on investment.

Not money.

Not status.

Not personal gain.

People often ask what volunteers get in return.

The answer is simple.

We get to watch children become more confident than they were yesterday.

We get to see teammates become lifelong friends.

We get to help build a community where every child belongs, regardless of skill level or experience.

Those moments don't show up on a paycheck.

They show up years later when a former player says,

"Thank you."

Or when they come back wearing a referee jersey.

Or when they volunteer to coach the next generation.

That's when you realize volunteering was never about giving something away.

It was always about investing in something bigger than ourselves.

At AYSO Region 165, our volunteers aren't here because they're looking for personal gain.

They're here because they believe every child deserves someone willing to show up.

And every season, they do.

If you've ever thought about volunteering, know that you don't have to do everything—you simply have to be willing to help. Whether you coach, referee, work concessions, line fields, join the board, or lend a hand where needed, you're helping shape childhood memories that can last a lifetime. We'd love to have you join us. Together, we're building more than soccer—we're building our community.
