Mountains United Girls Spring 12U Win AYSO’s Spring Select 2024 Championships

Last Friday, May 31st, the Mountains United Girls 12 and under (12U) American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Mountains Region 165 took home the trophy as the winners of the Spring Select competition. Rim High School soccer coach Brian Cavazos and assistant coach Stacey Pattison, who is a Rim alum and former girls’ soccer player at Rim, guided the girls to a 9 and 1 season and finished with a 1-0 final game against French Valley.

The AYSO region is composed of 10 teams from 10 different AYSO regions. Practices were at Rim High School. Unfortunately, due to field conditions, the Mountain United had to play all their games on the road. The girls started off the season with a 3-2 loss to Corona then went on to win 15 games in a row, including a championship trophy at the River Daze tournament in Bullhead City, Arizona.

The girls finished the regular season 9-1, beating (9-0) French Valley 3-2 to clinch the regular season title. Then they beat Menifee, 2-0 in the semifinals and finished it off with a 1-0 win in penalty kicks (PK’s) against French Valley to secure the first ever Mountains Region 165 Spring Select title!

The team consists of 12 girls from the mountain, many of which Coach Cavazos has had the pleasure of coaching since they were 5 years old. Sadly, that concludes the season, but these girls will be back next year ready to defend their title.

The members of the Mountain United are #11 Brynn McCaskell, #2 Braylee Stephenson, #5 Peyton Cavazos, #6 Elsie Darling, #8 Abby Benz, #9 Sadie Pattison, #10 Lexi Gotts, #13 Brooke-Lynn Magallon, #15 Giuliana Vacio, #68 Vivian Taylor, #77 Gianna Banks and #99 Hannah Benz.

Coach Cavazos said that “Larry and Sandy Caplinger started AYSO on the mountain over 50 years ago! They are still a huge part of the organization today and received an amazing legacy award at an AYSO convention this past year. Larry and Sandy Caplinger said that in their 50 years of AYSO on the mountain they have never had a team win a Spring Select season. Congratulations to the Mountain United Girls Spring 12U for winning the AYSO’s Spring Select Championships.
